Creating your first upsell
Updated Sep 10, 20263 min read
Creating an upsell takes two steps: build the offer in Hype Upsell, then set up the checkout surface it shows on. An upsell goes live the moment you save it, but nothing appears to shoppers until its surface is set up in Shopify.
If you have just installed the app, start with Install and set up Hype Upsell.
Hype Upsell does not touch your theme. All three surfaces are Shopify checkout surfaces, so there is no theme app embed to enable and no theme code to add.
Step 1 — Create the upsell
- Open Hype Upsell from your Shopify admin. The page is titled Upsell.
- Click Create upsell.
- Under Details, enter an Upsell name. This is internal and is never shown to customers.
- Choose a Surface: Post-purchase page, Thank-you page, or Checkout. Checkout is available on Shopify Plus only. See Which surface should I use?.
- Under Trigger, choose which orders get the offer. The default is Any product in the order. See Choosing when an upsell is offered.
- Under Offer, click Select offer products and pick the product or products you want to offer. For a product with several variants you can click the pencil to narrow the offer to specific variants.
- Choose a Discount: Percentage off, Amount off, Set product price, or No discount, then enter the value. See Discounts on upsells.
- Under Appearance, set the Offer heading and pick the Accept button label and Decline button label. See Heading and button labels.
- Click Save.
Saving sets the upsell to Active. Every later save re-activates it, so an upsell you disabled goes live again if you save it from the editor. To take it down without deleting it, use Disable from the row's actions menu on the home page.
Step 2 — Set up the surface
Each surface needs one piece of setup inside Shopify, done once per store:
- Post-purchase page — select Hype as your store's post-purchase app under Settings → Checkout. Only one app per store can hold this slot. See Showing upsells on the post-purchase page.
- Thank-you page — add the hype-upsell app block to the Thank you page in the checkout and accounts editor. See Showing upsells on the thank-you page.
- Checkout — add the same app block to the Checkout page in the editor. Shopify Plus only. See Showing upsells in checkout.
While an upsell is open in the editor, a banner appears at the top of Details if its surface is not set up yet, with a button that opens the right Shopify page. The banner disappears on its own when you come back to the tab after finishing setup.
The setup guide and the surfaces card
The home page carries two things that track this:
- Get started with Hype Upsell — a two-task guide: Create your first upsell and Set up your checkout surface. It shows "X of 2 tasks complete" and retires itself once both are done. You can dismiss it at any time.
- Checkout surfaces — a card that reads "You have X/Y surfaces set up." Click the count to open Checkout surfaces status, which lists all three surfaces with an Active or Inactive state and a Set up button that deep-links into Shopify. On stores that are not on Shopify Plus, Checkout is listed with a Shopify Plus badge instead of a state.
Thank-you and checkout block placement is read from Shopify while the page is open. If it cannot be read, the row says "Placement can't be verified from here. Check the checkout editor." — that is not an error, just an unknown.
One offer per surface
Only one upsell is shown at a time on each surface: the most recently created Active upsell whose trigger matches that order or cart. Older upsells on the same surface stay in reserve and are used only when the newer ones do not match.
