Showing upsells on the thank-you page
Updated Sep 10, 20263 min read
To show upsells on the thank-you page, add the hype-upsell app block to the Thank you page in Shopify's checkout and accounts editor. A thank-you upsell shows nothing until that block is placed.
The thank-you page is the order confirmation page the customer lands on after the order is placed. The offer sits wherever you position the block on that page.
Add the block
- From your Shopify admin, go to Settings → Checkout.
- Next to the checkout profile you use, click Customize.
- At the top of the editor, switch the page selector to Thank you.
- Click Add app block in the section where you want the offer.
- Choose hype-upsell.
- Drag the block to the position you want, then click Save.
The quickest way in is from Hype: on the home page, open the Checkout surfaces card and click Set up on the Thank you page row, or use the Open checkout editor button on the banner inside a thank-you upsell. Both deep-link straight to the published profile's Thank you page.
App blocks on the thank-you and order status pages are available on the Basic plan or higher (Shopify: Customizing your checkout and customer accounts with apps). Shopify Plus is not required for this surface — only the Checkout surface needs Plus.
In the editor you see a placeholder
Inside the checkout editor the block renders a notice reading "Your thank-you upsell offer appears here for eligible customers. Visible to you in preview only." That is expected. The editor has no real order to build an offer against, so nothing else can be shown there. Test with a real order instead.
What the customer sees
The block renders your Offer heading, the line "Ships together with the rest of your order.", and one row per offered product with a thumbnail, the original price struck through, the discounted price and a discount badge. Two products are shown at a time; if the offer has more, arrows page through them. Your decline label appears as a link under the rows, and dismissing hides the offer for that page view.
What happens when a customer accepts
The thank-you page cannot change an order from inside the page, so accepting works differently from the other two surfaces:
- The customer clicks the accept button and is taken to Hype.
- Hype adds the product to the existing order using Shopify's order editing, applying the discount as a line-item discount.
- Shopify's hosted "pay the difference" page opens so the customer can pay for the addition.
Two consequences are worth knowing before you choose this surface:
- The edit is committed before payment. If the customer closes the payment page instead of paying, the item stays on the order as unpaid. Check such orders before fulfilling them.
- No edit notification is emailed. Shopify's order edit notification is suppressed, so the customer is not sent a separate "your order was updated" email.
If anything goes wrong during the accept — an expired link, an unavailable variant, or a Shopify error — the customer is sent back to your storefront rather than to an error screen, and the order is left as it was unless the edit had already committed.
Placement can't always be verified
Hype reads block placement from Shopify while the app page is open. When that read is unavailable, the Checkout surfaces status row says "Placement can't be verified from here. Check the checkout editor." That means unknown, not missing — open the editor and confirm the block is there.
