Discounts on upsells
Updated Sep 10, 20263 min read
An upsell offers one discount, set in the Offer section under Discount, and it applies to every product in that offer. There are four types: Percentage off, Amount off, Set product price, and No discount.
The four discount types
Percentage off
Takes a percentage off the offered product's price. The value field is Discount value, with a % suffix, and accepts 1 to 100. The customer sees a badge reading, for example, "15% off".
Amount off
Takes a fixed amount off the offered product's price, in your store's currency. The value field is Amount off and the minimum is 1. The badge reads, for example, "10 off". The discount is never allowed to exceed what the line is worth.
Set product price
Sells the offered product at the price you enter, rather than discounting by an amount. The value field is Set price to and the minimum is 1. The badge reads "Special price".
If the price you set is not below the product's current price, no discount is applied at all — the offer simply sells the product at its normal price. Hype never raises a price.
No discount
Offers the product at its normal price, with no badge and no discount on the order. Useful for a genuine convenience add-on: gift wrap, a warranty, a bundle partner you do not want to discount.
Quantity is always one
Accepting an offer adds one unit of the chosen variant. Customers cannot pick a quantity, and the discount is priced for a single unit.
Where the discount actually comes from
The mechanism differs by surface, and it matters if you go looking for the discount in your Shopify admin:
- Post-purchase page — the discount rides along with the change that adds the product to the order, and appears as a discount on that new order line.
- Thank-you page — the discount is applied as a line-item discount when Hype edits the order.
- Checkout — the discount comes from a Shopify automatic discount that Hype maintains, titled Hype Upsell Discount (Do not delete). Do not edit or delete it.
In every case the amount is computed by Hype's servers from your saved configuration. Nothing about the price is taken from the customer's browser, so an offer cannot be tampered with into a bigger discount.
The discount title on the order
By default, the discount is labelled with the offer itself: "15% off" for a percentage, "10 off" for an amount, "Special price" for a set price.
To use your own wording, tick Use custom discount title and fill in Discount title. The field's own help text says it plainly: "Shown as the discount label on the order. Defaults to 'X% off'." Whatever you enter appears as the discount's name on the order and, on the checkout surface, as the strikethrough label on the discounted line.
The Use custom discount title checkbox is hidden when Discount is set to No discount, since there is no discount to label.
Stores selling in more than one currency
Percentage off works correctly everywhere.
Amount off and Set product price are single numbers, not per-market prices, and they are used as-is in the buyer's currency without conversion. A "10 off" is 10 units of whatever the buyer is paying in. If you sell in several currencies, use Percentage off, or accept that the amount is approximate outside your home currency.
Combining with your other discounts
The checkout surface's automatic discount is set to combine with your order, product and shipping discounts, so a customer who already has a discount applied keeps it and still gets the upsell price. On the post-purchase and thank-you surfaces the discount is attached directly to the new line, so it does not compete with the discounts already on the order.
