Showing upsells on the post-purchase page

Updated Sep 10, 20263 min read

To show upsells on the post-purchase page, select Hype as your store's post-purchase app in Settings → Checkout. Until you do, a post-purchase upsell never renders — Shopify simply skips the page.

The post-purchase page is the screen Shopify shows after the customer pays but before the order confirmation page. Accepting an offer there adds the product to the same order and charges the card the customer just used, with no second checkout.

Select Hype as your post-purchase app

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Settings → Checkout.
  2. Find the Post-purchase page section.
  3. Select Hype Upsell.
  4. Save.

You can also reach this page from Hype: on the home page, open the Checkout surfaces card and click Set up on the Post-purchase page row, or use the Open checkout settings button on the banner inside a post-purchase upsell.

Shopify only shows the Post-purchase page section once at least one installed app offers post-purchase features, and you can use only one checkout app to add post-purchase features at a time (Shopify: Customizing your checkout and customer accounts with apps). If another upsell app currently holds the slot, selecting Hype replaces it — that other app's post-purchase offers stop showing.

Post-purchase extensions are available on the Basic plan or higher. Shopify Plus is not required for this surface.

Which orders are eligible

Shopify — not Hype — decides whether a post-purchase page is shown at all. Per Shopify's post-purchase documentation, no post-purchase page is shown when:

  • The customer paid with an installment or wallet service, such as Klarna, Affirm, Afterpay, Apple Pay, Amazon Pay, or Google Pay.
  • The purchase was made with a gift card, or with any payment method other than a credit card.
  • The store uses a payment provider that requires the card verification number to be retained (for example Braintree, Payflow Pro, PayPal Payments Pro, or Eway).
  • The order involves duties and multiple currencies.
  • The order is for local delivery.
  • The order total is below $0.50.
  • The order was placed through a sales channel other than the Online Store.

Shopify also allows a maximum of three accepted post-purchase offers per checkout, and may skip post-purchase pages entirely during periods of extreme platform load.

This is the single most common reason a merchant's test order shows no offer: paying with Shop Pay's saved wallet, Apple Pay, or a gift card. To test, place an order through your online store with a plain credit card.

What the customer sees

Hype renders a heading, an introductory line naming the product and its discount, then one card per offered product with an image, the original price struck through, the discounted price, a discount badge, and Subtotal, Shipping, Taxes and Total rows for that order edit. Products with more than one allowed variant get a dropdown per option.

The accept button carries the label you chose; the decline link at the bottom carries your decline label. Once a product is accepted, its card collapses to "✓ Added to your order" and the exit link changes to Continue to order confirmation. If a charge cannot be applied, the card shows "Couldn't add this to your order. Your original order is unaffected." and offers a Try again; after a second failure the card gives up and says so. The original order is never changed by a failed accept.

How the charge works

Hype builds the change server-side and signs it; Shopify verifies that signature before charging the customer's card for the difference. The added product joins the original order, so it ships together and appears as an extra line on the same order. See How accepted upsells are charged.
