Keeping upsells up to date
Updated Sep 10, 20263 min read
Open the upsell and click Save whenever you change the price, title, or variants of a product it offers. Some of what an upsell shows is captured when you pick the product, and only a re-save refreshes it.
Nothing is needed after a collection change — collection membership is read live.
Re-save after a price or title change
When you pick an offer product, Hype stores its title and price alongside the upsell. Those stored values are what the offer card shows for a product pinned to a single variant: the struck-through "was" price, the discounted "now" price and the product name.
Change the product's price or rename it in Shopify and the offer keeps showing the old values until you open the upsell and save it. Saving re-reads the product and stores the current values.
What is charged is more forgiving than what is shown:
- Percentage off is applied to the real, current price at the moment the customer accepts.
- Set product price is worked out from the product's live price when the customer accepts, not from the stored one — and it is skipped entirely if it would raise the price.
- Amount off is the fixed number you entered.
So a stale capture usually means a wrong-looking price rather than a wrong charge. It is still worth fixing: an offer that advertises a price the customer is not charged causes support tickets either way.
Products where you left All variants selected are enumerated live at offer time and are not affected by this.
Re-save after changing which variants exist
Variant narrowing is stored as a list of variant IDs. If you delete or replace variants of an offer product in Shopify, open the upsell, click the pencil on that product row and reconfirm the selection, then save. An offer whose stored variants no longer exist cannot be served, and the offer is skipped silently.
Collection changes need nothing
Products added to or removed from a triggering collection take effect on the next order — membership is resolved live on every surface, including checkout. This is true for automated and manual collections.
The one exception: if a Checkout upsell with a Products from selected collections trigger stops discounting immediately after a Hype update, open it and save it again. Saving rewrites the discount configuration the checkout function reads, which brings the collection list back into sync.
What saving does
Saving is not just a write. Every save:
- Sets the upsell to Active. An upsell you had disabled goes live again if you save it from the editor. Use Disable on the home page row to take it down.
- Refreshes the stored product title, price and image.
- For Checkout upsells, rewrites this upsell's entry in the shared Hype Upsell Discount (Do not delete) automatic discount, including the collection list.
Changing an upsell's surface away from Checkout removes its entry from that shared discount; changing it to Checkout adds one.
A quick maintenance routine
- After a price change on an offered product: open the upsell, Save.
- After renaming an offered product: open the upsell, Save.
- After deleting variants of an offered product: reconfirm the variant selection, Save.
- After adding or removing products from a triggering collection: nothing.
- After a Shopify plan change onto Plus: the Checkout surface becomes selectable; existing upsells are unchanged.
