Choosing when an upsell is offered
Updated Sep 10, 20263 min read
The Trigger section decides which orders and carts get the offer. There are four options, and the default — Any product in the order — offers the upsell to everyone.
Triggers look at the products the customer is buying. They do not look at order value, customer tags, quantity, country, or anything else yet.
The four triggers
Any product in the order
Every eligible order or cart gets the offer. Use this for a store-wide add-on, or as a fallback upsell behind more targeted ones.
Any product except selected
The offer is shown unless the order contains one of the products you select. Use it to stop offering an item to people who already bought it, or to exclude a category the offer makes no sense for. Click Select products to choose; the button then reads Edit products (N).
Specific products in the order
The offer is shown only when the order contains at least one of the products you select. This is the trigger for genuine attach offers — a case with a phone, a refill with a machine.
Products from selected collections
The offer is shown only when the order contains at least one product that is currently in one of the collections you select. Click Select collections; each selected collection shows its live product count.
For all three targeted triggers you must select at least one product or collection before the upsell can be saved.
Triggers match on products, not variants
A trigger matches at the product level. If a customer buys any variant of a selected product, the trigger fires. There is no way to trigger on one specific variant.
Collections are checked live
Collection membership is read at the moment the offer is requested, not stored when you save. Add a product to a triggering collection and the next matching order gets the offer — there is nothing to re-save. This applies to automated and manual collections alike.
Two limits worth knowing:
- If the live collection lookup fails, the offer is hidden rather than shown. A collection-triggered upsell can therefore go quiet during a Shopify API problem instead of showing to the wrong shoppers.
- Across all your Checkout upsells, the discount configuration can reference at most 100 collections in total. Past that, saving is refused with a message naming the count.
What each surface looks at
The products a trigger is matched against differ by surface, because the surfaces run at different moments:
- Post-purchase page — the products in the order that was just paid for.
- Thank-you page — the products in the placed order.
- Checkout — the products currently in the cart. If the customer changes the cart after the offer loads, the offer does not re-evaluate on the spot.
Only one upsell is shown per surface
For each surface, Hype serves the first eligible Active upsell, checked newest first by creation date. Once one matches, the rest are not considered for that order.
In practice that means the newest upsell wins ties, so build them in this order:
- Create the broad, catch-all upsell first.
- Create narrower, better-targeted upsells afterwards.
If a general upsell you created last is swallowing traffic from a specific one you created earlier, disable and re-create the specific upsell so it is the newer of the two, or narrow the general upsell's trigger.
The offer product is not excluded automatically
If a customer already has the offered product in their order, they can still be shown the offer and buy it again. Use Any product except selected and select the offer product to suppress that.
